Tokolo Asao, Hiramoto Tomoki, and Iguchi Kota, one of CCBT\u2019s current teams of artist fellows, will present FORMING SPHERES as an off-site exhibit at Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions from February 3, 2023. The latest work by these three designers who contributed to the much-discussed drone display at the opening ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, FORMING SPHERES uses 3D printers to reconfigure Tokolo\u2019s kumi-ichimatsu-mon<\/em> traditional checkered Japanese pattern from the Tokyo 2020 emblems as a spherical sculpture. When light is projected onto the sculpture, it transforms into an installation created through the interplay of light and shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the unveiling of the new work, CCBT will hold an exhibition introducing how FORMING SPHERES was made. Pairing Tokolo\u2019s unwavering exploration of geometrical Japanese motifs with Hiramoto\u2019s digital fabrication and Iguchi\u2019s dynamic motion design, experience the process behind the team\u2019s collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokolo Asao<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artist<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Tokyo, 1969. Studied architecture from childhood under Shin Egashira, and began creating patterns on September 11, 2001 under the theme of \u201cconnecting,\u201d and continues to work across the boundaries of art, architecture, design, and other fields. He also designs and produces three-dimensional objects based on the same principle. Major works include Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic emblems, Dainagoya Building lower level glass pattern, TOKOLOPATTERN MAGNET, etc. He has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo\u2019s Faculty of Engineering since 2016 and at the University of Tokyo\u2019s College of Liberal Arts since 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Space Designer \/ Architect<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spatial Designer \/ Architect Born in 1987, graduated from Keio University\u2019s Graduate School of Media and Governance (SFC) with a Master\u2019s degree in Ex-Design. He was involved in the launch of FabLab Japan as a student and established wip in 2015. He has been designing across scales from products to spatial design using digital technology. For the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, he worked on the podium project and participated in the production of a 3D drone animation for the opening ceremony of the Olympics. He is the author of the book \u201c3D Printing Handbook\/O\u2019Reilly Japan\u201d and a regular contributor to design magazines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Born in 1984, based in New York and Tokyo, he founded TYMOTE Inc. in 2008 while a student at Musashino Art University\u2019s Department of Basic Design, and in 2013 founded the Creative Association CEKAI. In 2020, he was in charge of creating the \u201cTokyo 2020 Moving Sports Pictogram,\u201d the first of its kind in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
